“Superstar” Rajini’s contribution to bollywood

Rajinikanth has worked in over 200 films in a career that spans more than 30 years. But sadly his outings in Hindi cinema were limited to the peak of his popularity in the ’80s and ’90s. Even then, he barely managed to work in 20-odd movies. But we bring you a list of 10 hindi films where Rajini sir rocked the Hindi audiences with his sensational style.

Andha Kanoon (1983)

Rajnikanth’s big debut in Hindi, Andha Kanoon was a runaway hit and it laid the foundation for the Thalaiva to make a prolific career in Hindi films. In Andha Kanoon Rajni played an angry young man who’s out on a revenge spree against the people who killed his family. Interestingly, the original angry young man Amitabh Bachchan played a special role in the film too. But it was Rajni’s all-black outfits and inimitable style that made this movie with Hema Malini so memorable.

Bewafai (1985)

There was a great deal of surprise and mystery attached with Rajnikanth’s role in Bewafai. The film features a love quadrangle between Rajesh Khanna and three women played by Tina Munim, Meenakshi Sheshadri and Padmini Kolhapure. Rajni sir’s character is a killer with ulterior motives. His presence adds a twist to plot. His performance brings in a slick edge to the proceedings too.

Bhagwaan Dada (1986)

Rajnikanth played the classic big brother in this movie. He played a godfather like character who gives up his life of crime to be a saviour and protector of the poor and exploited. He’s called Bhagwaan Dada and a kid Hrithik Roshan plays his adopted son. The movie also has Rakesh Roshan and Sridevi and this film about being a good human being was like mirror to Rajni sir’s real–life benevolence.

Uttar Dakshin (1987)

A colourful and wealthy guy, Rajnikanth’s character in Uttar Dakshin was unlike his usual action-oriented self. His fluent dances while wearing colourfully stylish clothes is a distinct memory from this film. The movie also features Jackie Shroff and Madhuri Dixit in what is a straight-laced family drama.

Chaal baaz (1989)

This movie was all about Sridevi in a double role, but Rajnikanth had a memorable role too. He played a merry taxi driver who loves his beer and liquor. The movie was high on comedy and the action department was handled by both Rajni sir and Sunny Deol.

Hum (1991)

Rajnikanth teamed up with Amitabh Bachchan once again, only this time he played his much younger brother in Hum. The main role in the film belonged to Mr Bachchan, but Rajni sir lent able support in scenes of comedy and action. Again, he played a police inspector but he didn’t have too much of his usual stylish and aggressive streak. Instead he played a mellow brother with consummate ease.

Aatank Hi Aatank (1995)

Inspired by The Godfather, Aatank Hi Aatank was the last time Rajnikanth featured in a Hindi film in a prominent role. The only other time he made a foray into Hindi movies was his small appearance in RA.One. But in Aatank Hi Aatank he played Munna, an orphan who’s adopted by the central character of Shiv. The movie also features Aamir Khan as Shiv’s real son. Young Aamir and Rajnikanth feature as brothers who make a mean, crime fighting team.

Jai Hind!
